Objectives of Education:
Determine the difficulties and impediments to diabetes care in the elderly.
Analyze and contrast the ADA-EASD and AACE diabetic management algorithms, with an emphasis on the algorithms’ attitude to the elderly when stated in these recommendations.
Recent cardiovascular safety studies for diabetic medications should be interpreted.
Establish objectives and A1c targets for the aged population.
Dr. Shannon admits financial relationships with Novo-Nordisk, Eli Lilly, and Boehringer Engelheim.
Michael H. Shannon, MD, is an endocrinologist and the Medical Director of Physicians of Southwest Washington, an Independent Practice Association in Olympia, Washington that manages Medicare Advantage and ACO contracts. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Washington’s Department of Medicine. He is on the Editorial Board of Clinical Diabetes and the Chair of the Professional Education Committee for the American Diabetes Association’s Washington branch.
From 2011 through 2018, he was the System Endocrinology Lead and Chair of the Endocrine/Diabetes Clinical Advancement Team at Providence St. Joseph Health, a 51-hospital integrated health system. He was the Medical Director for his region’s Accountable Care Network, which was focused on quality measures and total cost of care reductions.
Dr. Shannon received his medical degree from the University of California, San Diego, and then went on to complete an internal medicine residency, a geriatrics fellowship, and an endocrinology fellowship at the University of Washington.
