Biography of Mario Esfiha
Mario Queiroga “Esfiha” was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 1975. Mario’s uncle was a judoka (judo combatant), and his father was interested in combat sports, however his job schedule prevented him from training. He passed on his love in martial arts to Mario Queiroga, who began practicing BJJ at the age of 14.
Ze Mario started his Jiu Jitsu experience in the prestigious ‘Corpo Quatro’ academy, a gym also known for having (perhaps) the first female BJJ team. The initial coaches for Esfiha were and.
He began teaching at Corpo Quatro in 1991 (while Ze Mario was still a white belt), and he was Esfiha’s teacher through all levels. Esfiha went with Traven when he left Corpo Quatro to start Academia Strike in collaboration with. This was in March 1993, and Queiroga had a blue belt at the time. Traven-Paiva, together with Fernando and, helped to form the in 1995, and Ze Mario Esfiha (now a purple belt) rejoined his coach. About this time, and owing to the ease of travelling, Ze Mario began taking courses at’s school. It was also around this time that Esfiha started teaching Jiu Jitsu full time, staying at the gym day and night, refining his and his partners’ grappling abilities.
After a successful super-fight in December 1998, Ze Mario Esfiha is granted his black belt by Roberto Traven. Queiroga, who is now a member of Alliance’s elite heavyweight black belt squad, continues to practice hard and has won medals in the world’s top events. His skill was discovered in 2000, when he was invited to Helsinki, Finland, to coach a squad in northern Europe. His competitive abilities have also earned him a spot at the ADCC (the world’s most renowned No Gi/Submission Wrestling tournament).
Ze Mario formed the Alliance team after the Alliance team disbanded in 2002. (2003). Mario relocated to Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada, late in 2003, where he taught for three years. During this time, Esfiha taught in a variety of locations, including London, Toronto, Kitchener, Ontario, and Calgary, Red Dear, Alberta. Following this period, he relocated from Canada to Austin, Texas, where he now teaches full-time at Mario Esfiha BJJ.
