The complexity of Thich Nhat Hanh’s writing is misleading. He’ll tell you stories about tree-hugging or analogies using raw potatoes; he’ll teach you how to eat consciously, even how to breathe and move; he’ll advise you to gaze intently at a flower and imagine the sun as your heart. However, as Zen instructor Richard Baker put it, Nhat Hanh is “a cross between a cloud, a snail, and a piece of heavy equipment.” It eventually dawns on you that Nhat Hanh is imparting a depth of psychology and a worldview that necessitates nothing less than a full paradigm change. He gradually works up to his philosophy of interbeing, the idea that none of us exist individually, but rather that we inter-are, through his adorable anecdotes and caring admonitions. The consequences are explosive. How can we pursue our particular goals blindly and selfishly when we are intrinsically linked to everyone and everything else? We regard an opponent as a human with a complex history, who might be us if we had the same history. To summarize, after reading Peace Is Every Step, you will never look at a plastic bag the same way again, and you may even acquire a fondness for hugging trees. Review by Brian Bruya
Peace Is Every Step is a wonderfully written book with reflections and meditations, personal tales and stories from Buddhist Nhat Hanh’s experiences as a peace activist, teacher, and community leader. It begins where the reader is already (kitchen, office, driving, wandering in a park) and demonstrates how profound meditative presence is now possible. Nhat Hanh offers exercises to help us become more aware of our own bodies and minds through mindful breathing, which may bring us instant joy and calm. Nhat Hanh also demonstrates how to be conscious of one’s own connections as well as the environment around us, its beauty as well as its pollution and injustices. Peace Is Every Step invites the reader to strive for world peace while also working on inner peace by transforming the “mindless” into the attentive via deceptively easy actions. Peace Is Every Step is an essential addition to any Buddhist studies or self-help library. Midwestern Book Review
