DescriptionAttachment theory and research provide couple therapists with a road map to important moments of damage and betrayal that threaten the safety of the link between partners, erode trust, and obstruct the development of healthy interactions. Attachment injuries occur when our expectations of safe bonding are broken through catastrophic circumstances such as affairs and abandonments during critical times of need such as a medical diagnosis, job loss, miscarriage, or parent loss. The therapist must understand how to methodically shape forgiveness of such hurts and use this process to assist the couple in creating a more stable relationship. The EFT forgiveness model consists of eight steps and is a corrective emotional experience that restores trust and alters the impact of the harm on the relationship. This has been shown in studies to be effective.
