Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D.,
Stephen Gilligan, Ph.D., works as a Psychologist in Encinitas, California.
He was one of the first NLP students at UC Santa Cruz, and his mentors were Milton Erickson and Gregory Bateson. He became one of the foremost professors and practitioners of Ericksonian hypnosis after getting his doctorate in psychology from Stanford University. This work evolved into his original ideas of Self-Relations and Generative Self, and eventually into Generative Coaching (in partnership with Robert Dilts). These many traditions have all been updated and incorporated into the current Generative Change Work, which includes Generative Coaching, Generative Psychotherapy, Generative Trance, Hero’s Journey, and Systemic Change work.
Over the last 30 years, he has taught in a variety of cultures and nations and has published widely. The Hero’s Journey: A Voyage of Self Discovery (co-authored with Robert Dilts), the classic Therapeutic Trances, The Courage to Love, The Legacy of Erickson, Walking in Two Worlds (with D. Simon), and Generative Trance: The Experience of Creative Flow are among his other publications. Generative Coaching (co-authored with Robert Dilts) is his next book.
