First, I’d want to introduce you to John, a CEO.
John is a calm, inquisitive man.
He makes sales gurus seem foolish. Especially the sales guru employed by his firm to teach his subordinates. It makes for a good narrative…
What occurred was as follows:
Jason, a top salesperson who had been training with the sales guru who had taught all of the company’s sales personnel in a new and better selling approach, sat in on a crucial sales meeting with John.
They were seated in an office together, demonstrating (and expecting to sell) information technology services to the CIO of another major corporation.
Jason, the employee salesperson, followed all of the sales methods he had been taught.
And he was doing an excellent job of using the new sales approach he’d learned. Everything was going swimmingly… Then, approximately 5 or 6 minutes into the meeting, something terrible occurred…
What occurred was that the CIO became irritated with the questions posed to him and the direction of the discussion… and… from there… exactly like a runaway hammer…
Everything went downhill quickly!
The more Jason, the staff salesperson, attempted to “get back on track” with the sales methods he’d been taught, the more enraged the CIO became.
At this awkward time in the discussion, John, the CEO, had to quietly intervene.
John (the CEO) did not use any of the sales methods he had been taught (he had not been taught any!). Yet, oddly, he made no mention of his company’s IT services or attempt to sell the CIO in any way.
But the strangest thing happened just minutes after John the CEO “took over”:
The CIO entirely “thawed” and, without any prodding, agreed to acquire information technology services. There was also no price negotiation. It was just — as they say in sales…
