Fstoppers has collaborated once more with architectural photographer Mike Kelley to deliver the second edition of Mike’s critically acclaimed educational series on real estate and interior photography. Mike concentrates on developing photos utilized by architects, interior designers, and high-end builders in this new photography course, Where Art Meets Architecture II: How to Photograph Luxury Homes and Advanced Photoshop Techniques. The purpose of this new educational lesson is to teach you how to improve your photographic skills, create photos suitable for publishing in high-end architectural and interior publications, and attract the attention of high-paying customers in the design and architectural markets.
The Positions
Mike wanted to shoot not just distinct homes to highlight the varied forms of architecture and design, but also residences placed in both urban and beautiful settings for this instructional. Throughout this 13-hour session, you’ll watch Mike apply his skills to capture residences in Beverly Hills and Venice Beach, Los Angeles, as well as the unique and breathtaking lava fields and beachside cliffs of Hawaii’s Big Island. This course examines many genres of architecture and design so you can understand how Mike solves typical difficulties he confronts in a number of locales, from bright and airy residences to postmodern holiday resorts.
Learn On-location Shooting Techniques and Tricks
Mike works through real-world challenges on site in each of the 21 sessions of this course. Each session sheds light on the specific procedures Mike utilizes on a regular basis to generate his unique aesthetic, whether it is lighting dark interior furnishings, regulating hot spots caused by the sun, creating a strong composition in a tight bathroom, or coping with adverse weather at daybreak. Each architectural setting provides a new backdrop to understand how Mike approaches this intriguing type of photography, from light painting and bracketing to tilt shift stitching and including the “human factor.”
Photoshop Follow Along
If you learn best via hands-on experience, you’ll be glad to know that we’ve provided all of the photographs you’ll need to follow along with Mike on each session. The training continues in the post-production studio once you’ve learned exactly how Mike pictures each residence on-location. Mike Kelley shows you through every step he takes to transform a lousy shot into an extraordinarily polished image suited for publication using heavy frame blending and photo editing. Because you have all of Mike’s files, you can construct your own stack of photographs in Photoshop and follow along step by step, honing your own post-production abilities. This article contains some of Mike’s most sophisticated Photoshop methods, including intricate cloning, repairing weird color casts, altering textures using frequency separation, replacing sky with luminosity masks, and comprehending multiple blending modes.
