In the preface of Yoga for Your Eyes, Meir Schneider states, “This is yoga because it is oneness with the eyes.” Schneider, who was born legally blind, underwent many procedures as a youngster but was unable to see anything other than light and shadow; he had to perform all of his homework in Braille. After holistically restoring his vision, he is now able to drive a car without the need of glasses or contacts. Schneider demonstrates his skills in this video, employing motions derived from two key sources: ophthalmologist William Bates’ procedures and Tibetan yoga.
Schneider first advises you to remove your contacts or spectacles (how he expects you to see the screen clearly enough to follow the exercises is not explained). Then he does “palming,” a vision-improvement practice. The instructions are detailed, including breathing instructions, and the exercises are easy and pleasant. The second portion is titled “Testing Your Vision,” and it instructs you to create your own eye chart to track your progress. The next step is “Stimulating Your Peripheral Vision,” which involves three pieces of black construction paper and tape to assist you balance the usage of both eyes at the same time. “Outdoor Exercises” outlines why elderly adults have greater eyesight problems and how to solve them. The last activities, “Sunning,” “Skying,” and “Long Swing,” assist you in acclimating to strong lighting.
Schneider is a sincere teacher who clearly believes in his approach. Yoga for Your Eyes is a great place to start if you want to enhance your vision naturally. A 62-page study guide is also included with the video. Jennifer Brown
