In the fall of 2004, I made my first trip to China’s world-famous Shaolin Temple. During my visit, I had a private audience with one of the head monks at a nearby school.
For an hour, he and his classmates demonstrated incredible strength and flexibility. Following that, I met with them and asked them various questions about how they honed their talents.
And what I discovered was incredible. At the same time, what they learned about me was as astounding.
Despite knowing I had won a world title in China (1997) in the oldest school of kung fu (shuaijiao), the tour guide made the traditional error of presuming I was inflexible due to my stocky, muscular frame.
“Unlike you,” the tour guide added, “these monks have extraordinarily flexible muscles.”
My Chinese brother-in-law then started laughing.
“Ta de ji rou zhen hen ruan,” he explained. “His muscles are extremely soft,” translates. (By the way, “soft” muscles in China refer to muscles that are supple rather than tight.)
When the monks found out I was flexible, they raised their eyebrows, so a demonstration was in order.
I got to my feet and stumbled backwards into a gorgeous bridge. I kicked over and back a few times from this posture, demonstrating the flexibility of my spine and shoulders as well as the power of my core.
I then slid into the splits. Then I extended my knees wide and flattened my chest like a pancake on the ground.
From there, I rolled onto my stomach, my hands gripping my ankles. I started bouncing off the ground from this position just by contracting my abdominal muscles.
“The proof” was delivered at this moment.
“Zhei ge lao wai zhen de hen li hai,” the translator instructed the chief monk. “Our foreign acquaintance is fantastic,” says the translator.
Muscles that are stiff Pain and old age go hand in hand.
When I left the temple that day, I couldn’t help but think about all the folks who believe I’m stiff and rigid because of my physical appearance.
Furthermore, and more crucially, these patients might tremendously benefit from the special stretching approach I teach.

Let me tell you about Vampiro, a world-famous pro wrestler and a perfect example of someone I helped develop significantly more flexibility in one hour than he might have in months, if not years, following other methods. He was as tough as an iron hound. He was much stiffer than I was.
Vampiro came to Tampa a few months back to train with me for a few days. When he was leaving, he said:
“I recently completed my private bootcamp with Matt. Today was fantastic. Oh, today was…… emotional. I couldn’t even get my nose close to touching the bridge when I first arrived. I could only see the top of my head. But Matt got me down and touched for the first time in 30 minutes. I also had a shoulder problem that was hurting me and necessitated surgery. I couldn’t move my right arm without experiencing severe shoulder discomfort. Matt had it fixed in 6 minutes. I also saw Matt assist a man who was so ill he couldn’t even speak! Always keep in mind that flexibility without strength is a terrible thing. If you’re in a combat sport and you’re limber but weak, you know what’s going to happen. That kind of adaptability puts you prone to harm. This is not a good thing. As a result, striking a careful balance between strength and flexibility is critical. It is not possible to have one without the other.
“What does it mean if you have the flexibility to kick someone in the head if you don’t have enough strength in the kick to knock him out?” I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again.

Deep Breathing Stretches will be covered on the second DVD.
