Applied Nutrition for Mixed Sports delves into the subject of nutrition for what I like to call “mixed sports.” This encompasses most team sports as well as boxing, MMA, and other combat sports.
Any activity that requires both endurance and strength/power is classified as a mixed sport. In comparison to pure endurance or strength/power sports, these sports have distinct physiological and training requirements. And this can make dietary optimization more difficult than in those sports.
In 2009, I conducted a session on this issue at Fraser University in Vancouver for their football and soccer teams. Rather of simply slapping the DVD with the handouts and slides together, I developed an accompanying book. I construct dietary recommendations from the ground up in the book and seminar.
Applied Nutrition Topics for Mixed Sports
The book/seminar begins with a consideration of the unique requirements of mixed-sport athletes. This leads to a consideration of the various nutritional components. Energy consumption, dietary protein, fat, carbs, vitamins, and minerals are all covered in depth.
This is followed by a look at food planning and optimal post-workout nutrition. I then go through hydration/cramping, vitamins, and how mixed athletes may change their body composition. Finally, I arrive to compile all of the material for various sporting circumstances.
