Combat sports. This word conjures up visions of peak physical and mental fitness—speed, flexibility, and strength combined with meditation, focus, and self-discipline, an image heightened by everything from exquisitely choreographed Hollywood films to MMA cage battles. However, the term “martial arts” refers to a vast array of helpful and highly specialized disciplines, ranging from kung fu to tai chi to jeet kune do.
One of the most difficult components of learning martial arts is figuring out what works best for you. What’s the difference between karate and tae kwon do’s rapid jabs and fierce kicks, judo’s grapples and rolls, tai chi’s flowing forms, and Krav Maga’s street-fighting grit? These fighting styles have some characteristics, but each has its own philosophy as well as a physical and mental approach. Yet, far too frequently, students and potential students are unable to experience and profit from the wide range of opportunities available in the martial arts.
Martial Arts for Your Mind and Body provides an intensive introduction to nine famous martial arts disciplines. These 25 engaging courses (one more than a regular course) provide you a thorough background in the many concepts, styles, and methods of the main martial arts families, hosted and brought together by tai chi Grandmaster David-Dorian Ross. Master Ross has hand-picked seven guest professors who are award-winning specialists in their industries for this course. Your teachers are the greatest of the best, whether sensei, sifu, or champion competitors.
You don’t have to be a cross-training warrior or an MMA fighter to gain from learning about other martial arts. In reality, with proper instruction, practicing martial arts provides important physical and emotional advantages to people of all ages and fitness levels. Martial Arts for Your Mind and Body is an excellent location to start, restart, or enhance your practice, from self-defense to the physical advantages of a disciplined workout program to the balance and harmony that learning martial arts can offer to all parts of your life.
Examine Nine Martial Arts Families
David-Dorian Ross has created a survey of the martial arts that provides a unique basis for greater physical and mental training, all of which can assist you in identifying certain practices and traditions that may be especially beneficial to you. The course allows you to go through the same kinds of discoveries that Master Ross went through as a young practitioner when he was looking for the perfect martial arts style for himself. Master Ross takes you on a tour of the following locations, accompanied by seven guest instructors:
Karate, or “empty hand,” is the most well-known Japanese martial art in the West. Learn the physical and mental methods that make it such a tough exercise, from kicking to kata.
Tae Kwon Do: Tae kwon do, like karate, is famed for its lightning-fast high kicks and shattering of boards. Discover why this style became so popular so fast after its birth in post-World War II Korea, and what distinguishes it from other martial arts.
Kung Fu: This technique, which dates back to the 5th century in China, has impacted most other forms of Chinese martial arts and has been codified into hundreds of varieties, many of which are named after animals. Discover the history and fundamental methods of kung fu as you study the white crane style for close- to medium-range contact and then the praying mantis style for maximizing your reach.
Tai Chi: Martial arts are about more than just speed and ferocious battle. Tai chi includes that option, but it is most known for cultivating calm, elegant motions, which have several health advantages. Tai chi (taiji quan) originated in China in the 17th century.
Judo: Judo is a Japanese martial art known for its grappling, flipping, and throwing techniques. Practice “the method of kindness” exercises and techniques. Judo was the first martial art to employ a belt system to classify combatants by ability level.
Jujitsu: Similar to judo, Japanese Jujutsu and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu are “pliable combat arts,” use groundwork and wrestling grips to gain control of the opponent. Prepare to take on new shapes!

Jeet Kune Do: Developed by Bruce Lee as a combination of traditional Asian martial arts and more modern, global systems, jeet kune do is intriguing for the way each unique practitioner may adapt and modify it.
Krav Maga: Combining aspects of jujitsu, boxing, wrestling, and other martial arts, Krav Maga forms a style of street combat about what to do in circumstances when there are no rules. Krav Maga, which began as a method for Polish Jews to protect themselves against fascists, is the Israeli Defense Forces’ distinctive combat style.
