If there’s one thought I want to leave you with today while you’re on this page, it’s that you can do your own public relations and have a lot of success.
My experience is not unique. I had designed a product, was ecstatic about my new enterprise, and believed deep down that I would be successful. I only had to inform the world about my product. I couldn’t afford advertising or a PR, so I had to find it out on my own.
I began booking myself in the media on a regular basis. When I was making some progress and had a marketing budget, I thought to myself, “I should employ a publicist now because if I can accomplish all of this, think what they can do!”
So I hired a PR, and despite their lofty promises, guess what? Significant disappointment.
And would you believe that in my first month of working with them, I was booked on Dr. Oz, FOX, and had pieces published in Parenting Magazine and the Washington Post?
They didn’t get me anything.
So… I let them go.
Realizing what I could accomplish on my own and not wanting to pay them a large check once a month for potentially nothing, I continued on my own – working, modifying, and figuring out what worked and what didn’t.
It turns out I made the perfect decision since I ended up appearing three times on the Steve Harvey Show and on other news shows around the United States. In addition, I’ve appeared in national, regional, and local journals and newspapers.
Here’s the reality about publicists, and it’s critical that you grasp it…
They aren’t as invested in your company as you are.
They will never be able to match your enthusiasm or energy.
They do not devote the same amount of time that you spend every day.
They almost certainly represent numerous clients, so you’re not the only one on their mind.
So, in addition to competing with your competitors, you must battle for your publicist’s time and attention.
There’s a better way to handle things that will save you thousands, if not tens of thousands, of dollars every month on hiring and retaining a publicist.
I educate folks how to gain a lot of publicity for themselves.
