DescriptionExcessive screen time can harm children’s brain development, social-emotional development, self-regulation, and a variety of other issues/behaviors. How can we foster a healthy tech environment for children when the issue is more than simply screen time?
In this session, you’ll learn how to choose media experiences based on the child, the context, and the content; research on the benefits and risks of screen time; why children and adolescents with ASD, ADHD, and language impairments are especially vulnerable; and strategies for managing screen time and alternatives to screen time.

Carol Westby, CCC-SLP, PhD, BCS-CL, ASDCS, is a world-renowned expert in child play evaluation and development. She created the well-known Westby Symbolic Play Measure, a research-based scale used to evaluate children’s social and play abilities. Dr. Westby has created and conducted programs to support personnel preparation, clinical service, and research, such as Project PLAY (Play and Language Attunement in Young Children), which teaches caregivers to promote play, theory of mind, and language development.
Dr. Westby is a fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), is Board Certified in Child Language and Literacy Disorders, and has received the Geneva College and the University of Iowa’s Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology’s Distinguished Alumnus Award, the ASHA Award for Contributions to Multicultural Affairs, the Honors of ASHA, and the Kleffner Lifetime Clinical Career Award.
Dr. Westby has published and spoken on topics such as play, autobiographical memory, theory of mind, language-literacy relationships, narrative/expository development and facilitation, adverse childhood experiences, screen time, trauma, metacognition/executive function, and assessment and intervention with culturally/linguistically diverse populations. She worked with the New Mexico Preschool for the Deaf, which uses a play-based curriculum.
Dr. Westby has worked as a visiting professor at Flinders University in South Australia on a language/literacy curriculum, and at Brigham Young University on SEEL, a systematic and engaging emergent literacy program that incorporates playful practice. She works as a consultant for Bilingual Multicultural Services in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and has a dual appointment in Communication Disorders at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
