The Iowa Department of Public Health’s Medical Director is Caitlin Pedati, M.D. She is the department’s medical adviser, as well as the department’s medical professionals and the general public. She is Iowa’s state epidemiologist. Dr. Pedati grew up in northern Virginia and graduated from Georgetown University with a Bachelor of Science in Human Sciences and a Certificate in Population Health. Through a dual degree program at George Washington University, she got her medical doctorate as well as a master’s degree in public health with an emphasis on epidemiology. She finished a residency at the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., with a degree in Global Child Health. The American Board of Pediatrics has certified her. After noticing common health concerns among her patients and wanting to make a bigger difference, she joined the CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service, which sent her west of the Mississippi River to Nebraska for the first time in her life. Prior to joining the Iowa Department of Public Health, she worked as a medical epidemiologist for the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.
