How can each of us be a therapeutic presence in the world?
Images and sounds of war, natural disasters, and man-made devastation surround us and leave an implicit imprint in our muscles, belly and heart, nervous systems, and brains in our skulls. We all receive more digital data than we can process in a day, which leads to a loss of empathy and human contact. This loss of leisurely, sustained, face-to-face connection makes true presence a rare experience for many of us, and neurally ingrains fast pace and split attention as the norm.
Despite this, the ability to provide a safe sanctuary of presence is critical to effective clinical trauma treatment and, indeed, to all therapeutic practice. Badenoch contends that it is our challenge to remain present in our culture, no matter how difficult this may be. She argues that we are wired to seek out, enter, and maintain warm relationships, and that this connection will allow us to contribute to the emergence of a more humane world.
In this book, Bonnie Badenoch, a gifted translator of neuroscientific concepts into human terms, offers readers brain- and body-based insights into how we can form deep relational encounters with our clients and our selves and how relational neuroscience can teach us about the astonishing ways we are interwoven with one another. Everyone is affected by how we go about our daily lives, often below the level of conscious awareness.
The first section of The Heart of Trauma gives readers a thorough understanding of how our physical bodies are involved in our conscious and unconscious experiences. The clinical implications of moving through the world are then explored further by Badenoch. She makes a compelling, scientifically supported case for engaging in the work of opening to hemispheric balance and relational deepening.
