Some members of the Body Ecology team recently visited Omega Institute For Holistic Studies, a retreat center in Rhinebeck, NY, to try a new detoxifying method: yoga.

What is the significance of detoxification, and how has it benefitted you?
People didn’t comprehend toxicity in the 1950s and 1960s. I didn’t “understand” detox until I established the mind-body connection and recognized that there has to be a physical and mental link for it to be comprehensive.
Focusing on detoxifying improved my skin and hair. Bloating was always a problem for me, and as I detoxed, I felt less bloated. My immune system was also stronger. I used to get bronchitis all the time, but my body no longer produces as much mucus. I’m feeling better.
And I’m not alone in this. Thousands of individuals have discovered the benefits of detoxification, which is why my Detox Flow® Yoga sessions are so popular. And, as demand for this vital program grew, I decided to produce a Detox Flow® Yoga CD so that individuals could improve their health and limit their exposure to pollutants at home.

How did you become interested in yoga?
I began teaching yoga in 1994, although I began performing yoga in 1987 while working at the Life Café in New York.
Many of others around me were doing drugs, such as cocaine. People in my immediate vicinity were becoming ill and hooked. I realized the only possible consequence was death. As an alternative to this way of living, my initial thought was to practice yoga with the Life Cafe proprietors, David Life and Sharon Gannon, who were also yoga enthusiasts. This is when I realized the genuine importance of yoga as a tool for personal transformation.
You have a packed itinerary. How do you keep healthy and happy when on the road?
I’m dedicated to what I do because it nourishes and feeds me. It’s a good partnership that serves my interests and gives me a sense of security.
Yoga practice and strict dietary control are non-negotiables for me. It’s the most difficult to be on the road. However, if I do not remain devoted, I drain myself. I rapidly feel the consequences of eating meals high in refined sugar.
I bring snacks and vitamins with me when I travel. I find out where the vegan eateries are by looking on Facebook. I contact a spiritual counselor for emotional balance so that I don’t let life’s stresses and stress impact my wellbeing.
Diet is an important part in maintaining equilibrium. You are what you consume. The person I want to be is one who is present, open, available, connected, and focused.
What are some of your favorite eating recommendations, and why is diet so important?
I urge people to consider diet in terms other than how it serves and helps them, and how what they eat affects the environment.
Consume seasonal foods, shop locally, and support farmers and farmers markets. Examine how much water and energy are used to transport your food across the nation.
Learn more about industrial farming and toxic treatment of animals. Use common sense and consume organic whole foods, readily digestible proteins, and things that our systems can digest in the appropriate order.
Learn about the factors that influence physiological wellness. Feel brighter and happier when your body feels healthier.
Toxins are found in more than only the foods we consume and the air we breathe. What more do we need to be aware of?
Look for additional areas in your life where poisons and judgment are present, and work toward forgiveness to remove toxins.
Anger, fury, and unresolved grief are all harmful to the body. They have an effect on immunity and hormones, making the body and cells susceptible to illness.
Do deep emotional work in order to live more cheerfully.
Tell us about your humanitarian efforts and how they have affected you.
The next stage was service, now that I was healthier and happier, and had better means to deal with conflict and stress.
I educate individuals in Africa, India, and Cambodia how to uncover and activate their purpose in their local communities. Instead than waiting for leaders to appear, I assist individuals become leaders. They take charge. I will continue to use my position to raise awareness about the necessity of outreach. Human trafficking and HIV/AIDS are the two big issues that I am fighting to alleviate.
