Archive : BBC – The Age Of Loneliness
Lonely. You may be the one. It may even be me. There are millions of us in the world.
This is dubbed “the age of loneliness” in the press. They claim it is a huge public health problem. A secret pandemic that is killing us. But we don’t want to discuss it. Nobody hates to acknowledge that they are lonely.
Sue Bourne, an award-winning filmmaker, feels loneliness must be discussed. It affects many of us in a variety of ways and at various times of our lives. So she set out to discover folks who were bold enough to go on camera and discuss their loneliness.
The Age of Loneliness features people of different ages, including Isobel, a 19-year-old student, Olive, a spunky 100-year-old, Ben, a divorcee, Jaye, a 40-year-old singleton, Richard, a 72-year-old internet-dating widower, and Martin, Iain, and Christine, who discuss their mental health issues.
Everyone speaks with such extraordinary honesty and bravery that their experiences can’t help but affect you.
