“We can’t help but think about words when we attempt to think about how we think. Language has been described as the material of mind by others. However, photos are considerably more memorable than words, because describing people, locations, and happenings transcends language. You’ve accomplished something spectacular when you take a shortcut, play chess or basketball, or rearrange your furnishings in your mind: abstract thinking without words.
Barbara Tversky, a psychologist, demonstrates in Mind in Motion that spatial cognition is not simply a subset of mind, but its essential base, allowing us to derive meaning from our bodies and their motions in the environment. Our acts in physical space are transformed into mental actions on thinking, which frequently erupt spontaneously from our bodies as gestures. Spatial thinking underpins the creation and use of maps, the construction of furniture, the development of football strategy, the design of airports, and the understanding of the flow of people, transportation, water, and ideas. Spatial thinking even underpins the form and meaning of language: why we say we push ideas ahead or break them apart, whether we’re happy or sad.”
