A South African psychiatrist named Joseph Wolpe, MD, he was a major player in the development of Behavior Therapy. Wolpe went to Parktown Boys’ High School during his formative years in South Africa. Joseph earned his medical degree from the University of Whitatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 1948. He retired as a professor of psychiatry from Temple University and previously led the school’s behavior therapy unit as an emeritus professor. He held the position of professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania Medical School. Three books and two anthologies as well as over two hundred scholarly articles and chapters make him one of the most prolific and well-respected behavior therapists in the world. The Journal of Behavior Therapy and Experimental Psychiatry was started by him together with others. The American Psychological Association honored him with their Distinguished Scientific Award in the Field of Psychology’s Applications.
