World War II gave birth to modern psychotherapy practice. Dr. Cummings was there, dealing with paratroopers in combat, and in the 60 years since he has been a psychotherapist and mental health champion. In the late 1950s, he created the first prepaid psychotherapy insurance benefit, demonstrating that psychotherapy should be included in all health insurance policies. He has been in the vanguard as an active participant in psychotherapy’s successes, setbacks, and future prospects. This talk will trace the growth of psychotherapy over the last 60 years via the life of one of its pioneers.
