Addiction and self-absorption are two particularly difficult difficulties that arise in couples counseling. Sue and Ellyn will discuss how to make strategic treatment decisions that move couples toward sobriety and more collaborative functioning using the Developmental Model of Couples Therapy. They will go over the problematic characteristics of the self-absorbed spouse and highlight techniques to promote other-differentiation as well as caring and compassion. Case studies will highlight the difficulty of confronting individual partners’ addicted and self-absorbed conduct while still supporting the couple’s developmental growth.
Objectives of Education:
Discuss four crucial Dos and four important Don’ts that are strong recommendations while working with addicted marital spouses.
Describe two methods for promoting other-differentiation in self-absorbed couples.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*

Sue Diamond Potts, M.A., R.C.C., is a psychotherapist with over 25 years of experience in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is the Founder and Director of the Good Life Therapy Centre, which specializes on assisting couples and individuals in rebuilding meaningful relationships following addiction and trauma. Sue began her career working with adult children of alcoholics, focusing on healing developmental trauma and grieving the loss of a childhood that was never experienced. She went on to research and teach somatic techniques to trauma healing. As a Certified Bader-Pearson Developmental Couples Therapist, she has trained therapists both locally and internationally in this approach.
