Conventional wisdom can be helpful, but it can also be perplexing when seemingly sound bits of advice contradict one other (for example, “Look before you leap…BUT he who hesitates is lost”). How does one know when to do this instead of that? How can we assist customers in making better decisions to improve the quality of their lives? Many insights into decision-making processes have come from the domains of cognitive neuroscience and phenomenology, and some of these will be presented in the context of active, short-term psychotherapies.
Objectives of Education:
Determine the impact of context in making good judgments.
Describe how a therapist may actively intervene by teaching discrimination criteria that help people make better decisions.
Describe how a therapist’s cognitive style or therapeutic philosophy might jeopardize treatment outcomes.*Content and confidentiality may be modified during sessions*
