Dr. Izumi Tabata, a Japanese scientist, and his colleagues at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan, developed the Tabata protocol. They used a model of interval training in their research.
Dr. Tabata ran a six-week fitness program with two groups. The control group exercised for one hour, five days a week, at a moderate level. The other group engaged in Tabata-style high-intensity training, which consisted of eight rounds of a 20-second work/10-second rest interval. The term “20/10” refers to a workout protocol in which one works really hard for 20 seconds before resting for 10 seconds. This pattern is repeated eight times. Four minutes have elapsed because of this. As a result, the control group put in 1,800 minutes of training time throughout the six-week period, whereas the Tabata group put in only 120 minutes.
Those in the Tabata group saw increases in their aerobic and anaerobic fitness. The Tabata group lost more fat via the lactic acid pathway in addition to the improved fat loss via respiration. Anaerobic fitness levels were increased by 28%.
Multiple controlled studies have demonstrated that the Tabata training approach is superior to steady-state cardio in terms of fat burned and muscle gained.
