DescriptionIs this anything you’ve heard before?
Mary, 72, is taken to the emergency room by ambulance from her assisted living facility, where she has an externally twisted and shortened left lower leg. She is in a lot of discomfort in her left leg and hip, and she has muscular spasms. As you check her on the stretcher, you see that she is diabetes and that she is extremely overweight for her apparent height. Mary admits to falling twice in the last month and admits to not following her medicine routine entirely.
What about this case?
Steven, a 63-year-old man, arrives to the clinic complaining of discomfort and trouble moving his left knee. He claims that he played football in college and had two arthroscopies because of meniscal injuries. He claims that he is aware of his arthritis but has been avoiding seeking treatment. Steven’s fear is that surgical intervention may be advised to address his arthritis, but he expresses his reluctance to have surgery on his left knee again at this time.
Older adult patients might come with a wide range of orthopaedic disorders and traumas, as well as various comorbidities. To guarantee a safe result for all patients, it is critical to get a complete medical and surgical history. How would you plan to accept and care for individuals who exhibit symptoms similar to those listed above? What steps will you take to improve their function and lessen their pain?
