I’ve been practising Yoga consistently for almost 4 years now. I began with the Yoga Zone introductory DVDs and thoroughly enjoyed them. I upgraded to “Rodney Yee’s Power Yoga – Total Body Workout” and was ecstatic! I purchased a few more DVDs from different Yoga practitioners, but none of them stood out or pleased me. I looked at them once or twice and then moved on. I’ve remained with “Power Yoga – Total Body Workout,” and I’ve appreciated everything about Rodney Yee so much that I figured I’d give him another chance when it came time to develop my practice. “Advanced Yoga” is just wonderful!
There are several thorough reviews that do an excellent job of describing what is on this DVD. I think the greatest advice I can provide is that if you like Rodney Yee’s videos, particularly “Power Yoga – Total Body Workout,” and want more diversity and more difficult positions, “Advanced Yoga” is precisely what you’re looking for. You’ll enjoy it! I watched it once through the day I received it and laughed the entire time. It was all I had hoped for.
And, strangely, it not only includes a wide range of postures that target the entire body, but the two primary areas of attention are strength – particularly in the arms and upper body – and hips – mine are quite tight. Because I’ve always been a runner, my hips and hamstrings require a lot of effort to relax up. This DVD set focuses mostly on the hips. And I didn’t want to be slender and lanky, so I wanted a lot of strength poses. I want to be flexible, balanced, and powerful all at the same time. I’m pretty strong, yet some of these postures will take me a year or more to master. They’re great, and just what I was hoping for.
Several critics have mentioned that he moves too rapidly between stances. People, in general, do not listen well. “It may appear that I go too rapidly from position to stance, but work at your own pace and build up to it,” Rodney says right in the start, so he’s clearly doing it for a reason. These are quite sophisticated postures, and you (and I) will ultimately catch up to him. One reviewer stated that the pace was too rapid at first, but that it quickly became his favorite DVD – and I can well understand why.
“Advanced Yoga” has really captivated me. It is everything I love about Rodney Yee – spiritual and relaxing, smooth and elegant, and yet highly demanding with a vast range of postures covering everything from strength, stamina, flexibility, and balance from head to toe.
