Melinda J. Bentley, Jefferson City Legal Ethics Counsel
Melinda J. Bentley is the Legal Ethics Counsel, and she offers attorneys with oral and written informal advising opinions on Missouri Rules of Professional Conduct concerns. She also serves as administrator and counsel to the Missouri Supreme Court’s Advisory Committee in that capacity. She started in that post in 2012. She formerly worked for the Illinois State Bar Association. She is a regular lecturer and author on the subject of professional accountability. Ms. Bentley is now on the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility. She is also a member of The Missouri Bar, Illinois State Bar Association, American Bar Association, National Organization of Bar Counsel, Bar Association of Metropolitan St. Louis, and Cole County Bar Association, as well as the Planning Committee for The Missouri Bar Solo and Small Firm Conference. She was a board member and official of the National Organization of Bar Counsel from 2015 to 2020, including a stint as President from 2018 to 2019, and previously served on the Editorial Board of the ABA/BNA Lawyers’ Manual on Professional Conduct (2015-2016) and as Chair (2016-2018).
