Make no mistake, this is a great DVD, and Shifu Yan Lei is an absolute master.
The reason I only gave it four stars is that it’s a bit short at 60 minutes, but Shifu Yan Lei may be a victim of his own popularity in that regard, as you can’t get enough of him.
Second, rather than focusing on traditional Shaolin Kung Fu, the DVD is primarily focused on Thai boxing, i.e. fighting in the ring.
That isn’t inherently a negative thing, but it does make the title rather deceptive.
In any case, the DVD format is as follows.
Shifu begins by providing a brief history of Shaolin Kung Fu and then goes over the fundamental Shaolin punches and kicks.
He then discusses how he moves on to ring combat but loses his first battle, prompting him to reconsider his Shaolin skills.
As a result, he adjusts his Shaolin training to incorporate more Thai boxing/boxing elements in order to better prepare him for gloved fighting in the ring.
The bits of his iron shirt steel body workout that he undertakes to toughen his physique are the highlights of this DVD for me.
Don’t attempt this at home, since he beats himself with bricks and enables other monks to break sticks over his body.
His strong shin kicks against bamboo poles are equally stunning.
Although not a specific training DVD, I feel that anyone practicing any sort of martial arts may benefit from this DVD in terms of their personal training.
“If a tiny guy battles a huge man, he will be terrified, but if the small man possesses an iron bar, he will not be scared,” for example.
He then demonstrates how he trains his arms to look like iron bars.
Such highlights make the DVD worthwhile to purchase.
It will, at the very least, motivate you.
