I truly loved the videos, particularly your clear and thought-provoking lectures and demonstrations…. As a martial arts student and instructor, I am really pleased to use this content into my own practice and lessons. Your approach to martial arts is new and powerful…and it has already had me thinking about how I can better teach my students and, more importantly, what I can better teach my students. —Matt Dorsey, Rochester, New York
THE WAY TO MASTERY (Part I)
Travel with Willem deTHOUARS (Kuntao Silat), Bruce JUCHNIK (KoshoRyu), and Tony ANNESI (Takeshin Sogo Budo) as they exhibit signposts on the technical path to Mastery. The first signpost is, of course, Basics. But the fundamentals are more than they appear. Even for a beginner, each art has a different idea of what the basics should be. DeThouars and Juchnik emphasize fundamentals like as perception and awareness, whereas Annesi discusses fundamentals such as posture and blocking stability. You should not only learn the fundamentals, but also put them to the test. Discover Shihan Annesi’s unique method for testing postural efficiency so you may enhance your own posture and structure.

THE WAY TO MASTERY (Part II)
Basics become Forms and Techniques. You’ve gone through several fundamentals of self-defense. However, fundamentals frequently transform into the more complex combinations known as kata or waza. Even these include more than meets the eye. Annesi’s bunkai of Tensho kata, for example, demonstrates a concept highlighted in his prior Transmutation films and Cracking the Kata Code videos: any form, whether kata or waza, may carry great meaning underneath its surface. Learn how a basic kata may have subtle applications that even experienced practitioners may overlook.
VOLUME TWO:
• ANNESI: from Kihon to Kata • TENSHO Bunkai • Experimenting with the Ridiculous • Continuing the Analysis • Moving on to the Next Level
• 1.5-hour Student Commentary DVD
THE WAY TO MASTERY (Part III)
Variation is produced through form and technique. For most trainees, progress in the martial arts includes expanding their repertoire of techniques or variants. The more strategies you have available to respond to an assault, the better you will be able to manage that attack. Because variations are limitless, it stands to reason that trainees see a broad repertory of variations as the pinnacle of martial progress. This movie implies that variation, while necessary, is simply a stepping stone on the path to mastery.
VOLUME THREE:
• JUCHNIK: The Master is a Student • Mimicking the Attitude • Secondary Rotation • Sensitivity Drill to Throw • Basics Differ • Capturing the King” • Defeating the Opponent’s Senses • Applying the Drill with a Blade • deTHOUARS: Redefining the Body • The “Ba-Tuha” Form • Applying the Form • Monkey Antics • “The Shield” • A Monkey “Form”
* The WAY TO MASTERY (Part IV)
Variations lead to Principles. Once you’ve amassed a plethora of variations, you’ll need a means to arrange them. A mile-long menu of technical options clogs even the master’s intellect. This is why the next milestone on the path to mastery is comprehending how variations may be condensed into a very small set of Principles (genri). Different artists approach Principle in different ways; yet, to master an art, you must go beyond the amassing of concretes to the integration of ideas. Are you new to studying principles? Not after you’ve seen this signage.
VOLUME FOUR:
•ANNESI on Principles • Coil to Uncoil • Control Circularity • Command Presence • You Think Where You Feel • Breathe Normally When You Can’t • Summary & Overview

Budo is the foundation of freedom. When you combine both approaches and concepts, you transcend beyond shape, form, and style. Not only do your training movements become habitual, but your everyday activities become organized with the new aim of self-defense. You may now convert any motion into a lock, a block, a strike, or a throw. Because budo has become a part of your life, your life may serve as the shape, style, and technique of your budo.
