The Book of Five Rings (,Go Rin No Sho?) is a treatise about kenjutsu and martial arts in general authored in 1645 by the samurai warrior Miyamoto Musashi.
It is regarded as a classic military strategy book, comparable to Sun Tzu’s The Art of War and Chanakya’s Arthashastra.
Various translations have been developed over the years, and it now has a far larger readership than only martial artists: for example, some corporate executives find its concept of confrontation and taking advantage to be pertinent to their work.
The current Hyh Niten Ichi-ry uses it as a method and philosophy textbook.
Throughout the poem, Musashi maintains a “no-nonsense” ethos.
For example, he frequently observes that technical flourishes are excessive, and contrasts such concerns with the concept that all technique is really a means of cutting down one’s opponent.
He also emphasizes that the concepts stated in the book are crucial for warfare on any scale, whether a one-on-one duel or a vast conflict.
Principle descriptions are frequently followed by exhortations to “examine this extensively” through experience rather than attempting to understand just through reading.
