Michael Elkin and Ann Sinko discuss IFS and Depression, Anxiety, and Shame.
Anxiety and depression are the most commonly reported symptoms among patients seeking psychotherapy, and shame is the fuel that drives both. A problem’s solutions are constrained by how it is defined. We will look into the following issues: Is sadness causing rage to turn inward? Do you have unresolved grief? Is it a chemical imbalance? Is anxiety associated with low self-esteem? A lack of decision-making ability? Fear? Or are you just drifting around? What if we didn’t need to define, but instead asked?
The IFS model offers us a novel approach to understanding and dealing with these basic human difficulties. Understanding that our symptoms are essentially the coping strategy of our components attempting to shield us from discomfort gives a foundation for dealing with chronic problems. This course delves at guilt, sadness, and anxiety via the lens of the IFS model. Our goal is to challenge your assumptions and expand your knowledge of shame’s systemic organizing nature. This course will help you improve your IFS abilities and add to your IFS toolbox.
Module One
The IFS Depression, Anxiety, and Shame Paradigm
This month will focus on how IFS characterizes sadness and anxiety as coping mechanisms in response to a limitation in the internal or external system, rather than as disorders. This insight serves as the foundation for a singularly effective treatment to these all-too-common symptoms.
You will discover:
How IFS compares and differs with existing depression, anxiety, and shame therapy methods
How a relational and systemic approach may discover and cure profound shame when other approaches may become stymied.
Shame’s role as a structuring principle in our internal systems
Module two
Anxiety and Depression Have Many Faces and Flavors
We’ll look at the protective system, including polarizations and alliances, protector methods, and therapist roles. When there is a loss of Self leadership, these constellations of parts emerge and are more successfully assisted when handled systematically in connection to one another.
This month you will learn how to:
Understand the Protector Constellations that might trigger sadness and anxiety.
Recognize and employ various protective methods
Deal with polarizations and alliances
Differentiate between sorrow and depression and how to address each.
Module three
Techniques for Dealing with Depression, Anxiety, and Shame
This will be an in-depth examination of difficulties and techniques for dealing with them. We will provide case studies and emphasize what we have discovered to be effective even in the most entrenched internal systems.
This month, we will look at:
Examples from clinical practice
Problems and their solutions
Addressing the anxieties and concerns of the various segments
In challenging systems, use Direct Access.
