Euphrasia Nyaki (Efu), Dr. Peter A. Levine’s SE Legacy faculty member, joins Peter in a vibrant dialogue about his early childhood experiences that lead to his lifelong passion and goal. As an inquisitive little child, Peter discovers Newton’s First Law of Motion. Later in adulthood, his curiosity with wild creatures evolved into a calling to learn what it means to be an embodied human being. While also seeking his own healing from a difficult event. Efu takes us on a tour through Peter’s life, sharing his scientific insights and personal experience in inventing the Somatic Experiencing® approach.
Sister Efu grew raised in the Tanzanian community of Nganjoni-Marangu, amid the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. She is a SETM Faculty member for the Somatic Experiencing Trauma Institute, as well as a respected member of Dr. Levine’s SE Legacy Faculty with the Ergos Institute of Somatic Education, and co-creator of AFYA, a Holistic Healing Center in Joo Pessoa, Brazil.
Efu has been integrating her family clan’s (the Nyaki clan’s) traditional medicine with her SE trauma recovery work for the past fifteen years. She is an expert in shock trauma, natural catastrophes, transgenerational trauma, emotional, developmental, and social traumas, as well as Family Constellations, massage, reflexology, Reiki, and mud treatment. She teaches SE all around Brazil and has also taught SE in Haiti, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Egypt, India, South Korea, Philippines, Hong Kong, Japan, China, and Spain. Efu studied and worked as a Mathematics and Science teacher at Chanjale Junior Seminary in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, before becoming a SEP. She left teaching in 1990 to join the Maryknoll Sisters Religious Community. In 1993, she was dispatched to her first mission in Brazil. Seven years later, she co-founded Afya, which means “healing” in Swahili, a Women’s Holistic Healing Center and a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that serves women in Joao Pessoa’s poorest areas. Afya’s healing goal was so effective that it organically grew to encompass women and their whole family unit, and the organization is currently celebrating twenty years of successful community healing and change.
