Have you ever encountered a client who was able to rationalize their trauma? Most likely not… since trauma is not cured by thought.
Clients come to us seeking methods to feel secure and in control in their everyday lives, yet the trauma client is frequently locked in a dysregulated condition.
They, like us, want to be able to negotiate the everyday “shifting” we undertake – changing from one state to another. From hyper to calm, furious to relaxed, and overwhelmed to in control.
They are “longing to enter into a state of regulation,” according to Deb Dana, LCSW, author of The Polyvagal Theory in Therapy (Norton) and international trainer.
And it is our responsibility to assist them. It’s what we trained for, what we wanted to accomplish, and where we got the most joy from our job.
Deb will provide you with the following benefits by watching this two-day applied training:
A thorough understanding of Polyvagal Theory – expressed in simple terms
Methods for working with the autonomic nervous system that foster connection and safety…
by use of skills she has perfected and will share with you
The Polyvagal method is not a therapeutic paradigm or regimen to follow. It is a knowledge of three organizational concepts that you may build your own strategy and technique around, integrating them with your own model.
The objective is for you to leave the session encouraged to try something new with a client – and with a plan for doing so effectively.
Each client is unique, each therapist is unique, and each technique is unique, but using our autonomic nervous system as a foundation and dealing with states of engagement and dysregulation are common components for clinical success. Learning Polyvagal Theory and how to implement it in your work might be one of the most transformative experiences of your professional life.
Polyvagal Theory is increasingly being addressed at conferences both here and abroad, written about in papers, and taught in academic settings. Complete this program to transform your practice. It’s time to quit being perplexed by the term “Polyvagal Theory” and see the immediate benefits of understanding and applying its concepts in your therapeutic practice.
Deb Dana, LCSW, is a clinician, consultant, and author who specializes in understanding and resolving the effect of trauma and creating methods of working that acknowledge the function of the autonomic nervous system via the lens of Polyvagal Theory. She created the Rhythm of Regulation Clinical Training Series and talks globally on how Polyvagal Theory might be applied in clinical practice. She is certified in Internal Family Systems, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, and Tapas Acupressure Technique, and she has finished the Trauma Center’s Certificate Program in Traumatic Stress Studies.
